Many different kamon, or family crests, appear together on the nineteenth-century theatre garment behind Ichiza. To recreate them, the linen is first dyed indigo and then printed with a discharge paste that removes the ground color, revealing the motifs from within the dyed cloth. Ichiza refers to a troupe or company of performers.
