Marquise Matsugae

Marquise Matsugae is crafted from slubbed 100% linen in a rich indigo hue. The fabric is made through a two-step discharge technique that selectively removes dye from the base cloth before artisans apply a block print using three hand-carved wooden blocks, layering in subtle red accents that lend depth and complexity to the organically weathered floral motif.

Inspired by the stately presence of the Marquise Matsugae in Yukio Mishima’s Spring Snow, this fabric captures a sense of dignified elegance and refined restraint, much like the Marquise herself. As a character grounded in tradition yet witnessing Japan’s changing cultural landscape, the Marquise embodies an austere beauty that speaks to an era of timeless decorum.
