The source for Dengaku is one of a pair of nineteenth-century Japanese Kyōgen theatre costumes, originally painted by hand. Its earthy palette suggested dengaku, agricultural dances that helped shape Japan’s theatrical traditions. The pattern is recreated in four hand screen-printed colors on a woven ground of hemp and linen.
