Umusuna

Umusuna is printed before the cloth exists. Cotton warp threads are temporarily held together in an open net while five colours are hand screen-printed directly onto them. The temporary weft is then removed and replaced with the final linen weft, shifting and softening the image as the cloth takes form. The name comes from Ushio Amagatsu’s Umusuna, a work whose title evokes birthplace and origin.
